Alcohols are used in lotions to preserve them indefinitely and to help the product dry quickly when applied, they also dry out your skin. Many times several different types of alcohols are used in lotions, etc so it doesn't have to be listed as the number one ingredient. May be listed as cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl myristate, steryl alcohol, acetyplated lanolin alcohol, any ingredient that starts with "alkyl".
